Abstract

In Pedagogy of Freedom, Paulo Freire notes creativity and curiosity as central to critical pedagogy for social change. Yet, creativity and curiosity are under-theorized in texts that speak to key concepts within Freire’s work. This session focuses on the role of “critical imagination” (creativity and curiosity for envisioning social change through education) as foundational to notable key ideas in Freire’s work (e.g., conscientizaçao, transformation, praxis, hope, and dialogue). Presentations highlight imagination in theory and practice, enacted in diverse educational settings and documented via multiple research methods including video, blogs, and narratives. Individual papers feature YPAR with urban youth, critical film making with Indigenous youth, science learning through the arts in the Caribbean, and currere with urban school practitioners.
