(Undocumented) Immigrants and Voice: Youth Narratives and Sense-Making of Local and National Immigration Policies

Abstract

This session brings together scholarship that analyzes immigrant youth’s narratives and sense-making of local and national immigration policies through multiple modalities. Key constructs include voice (Juffermans & Van der Aa, 2013) and counter-narrative (Solórzano & Yosso, 2002) as related to social inclusion/exclusion processes of immigrant incorporation. Two papers focus on undocumented youth’s narratives: first, as expressed through counter-narratives captured on a 17-minute film to be screened and analyzed for its impact on other high school students, and second, in relation to a local community college’s policies accommodating undocumented youth. A third paper focuses on immigrant-origin youth’s responses to Presidential debate clips about immigration policy. The panel is designed to facilitate a robust discussion with two discussants and audience participation.
