School Segregation Along the Eastern Seaboard: Illuminating Historical Circumstances, Exploring New Challenges, Updating Tested Policies

Abstract

This session distills key examples and lessons from an extensive study of school segregation patterns along the densely populated Maine-North Carolina stretch of the East Coast, home to nearly a quarter of U.S. students. Using enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics, we analyze multiple measures of school segregation between the years 1989 and 2010 and pay close attention to how patterns have developed within urban and suburban areas. The five papers in this session, together with a discussant with intimate knowledge of policy and law in this arena, will provide educational researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with critical information to inform future efforts to ensure equal educational opportunity along the Eastern Seaboard (including Pennsylvania) and across the nation.
