Abstract

This interactive symposium session explores the interconnection of empirical research and philosophical inquiry. While many philosophers of education are involved in empirical research, their projects raise important methodological questions. How might empirical research be a mode of philosophic inquiry? How does a philosophical orientation shape the conceptual frameworks, methodology, and analysis of empirical research? What is the distinctly philosophical work that philosophers of education do when they engage in empirical research? The six contributors in this session will share diverse examples of philosophical studies that incorporate empirical research in education. The co-chairs will frame the session and lead participants through an interactive discussion that explores key questions around the intersection of philosophic inquiry and empirical research.
