Innovative Approaches to Integrating Morphology Within Adolescent Literacy Instruction

Abstract

Morphological awareness has received increased focus within the research and education community (Carlisle, 2010). The goal of this symposium is to use innovative approaches to deepen understanding of how morphology fits within language and literacy development for middle school students. To do this, connections to vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing will be explored. Presenters will highlight supports of Latin morphemes to vocabulary knowledge, differences in supports for expository versus narrative reading comprehension, and supports for writing quality. The fourth presenter will explore the effectiveness of an integrated morphological vocabulary intervention that includes morphological problem-solving instruction as part of reading comprehension instruction. The goal is to use innovation to further understandings of how morphology can be integrated within adolescent literacy instruction.
