Teacher-Student Interaction Patterns: Integrating Models of Instructional and Social Dynamics in the Classroom

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 103B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session provides integrative perspectives on emerging research examining teachers' strategies for interacting with students in upper elementary/middle school years. Two papers focus on the CLASS, an observational measure of general teacher-student interaction patterns. These studies examine the validity of an upper-elementary version of the CLASS and use propensity score analyses to examine the effects of interactions on classroom social dynamics. Two papers examine interaction strategies for managing classroom social relationships by considering teachers’ self- efficacy for managing peer relationships as well as teachers’ conceptualizations of their role in managing social relationships. Taken together, these papers provide an overview of current methodologies employed to understand teacher-student interaction patterns and integrate models of instructional and social dynamics in the classroom.
