Schools’ Experiences With School Improvement Grants (SIGs): First-Year Results From SIG Case Studies

Abstract
This symposium will present findings from the first year of the Study of School Turnaround, conducted on behalf of the Institute of Education Sciences. This study comprises case studies of 25 schools that received grants through the School Improvement Grant program. In addition to a policy overview and methodological discussion, presentations will focus on the role of SIG as an impetus for reform, whether SIG case study schools experienced a disruption from past practice, and school leadership in school turnaround. The concluding paper will discuss school capacity and perceptions of improvement. In light of the complexity of the methodological, policy, and practice issues, the symposium will allow substantial time for an interactive discussion that integrates researcher and practitioner perspectives.
