Philanthropy and Charter School Practice and Policy: State-Based Case Studies

Abstract

This session critically examines the role of philanthropy on current charter school practice and policy through case studies based in Colorado, Georgia, and Michigan. Researchers who study the role of philanthropy in education detail how funders work with other stakeholders at local, state, and national levels to incent educational reform policy on charter schools. Each of these cases provides an in-depth examination of the extent to which philanthropists are involved with coalitions of actors within and outside the state to change state level educational policy. Using advocacy coalition and strategic action field frameworks, these cases highlight ways philanthropists work within coalitions to shape and respond to school reform efforts.
