Abstract

The purpose of this symposium is to examine the existing policies and practices regarding media literacy education in both P-12 schools and prservice preparation. The growing field of MLE helps individuals develop habits of inquiry and skills of expression needed to be critical thinkers and effective communicators with a wide range of messages using image, language, and sound. This symposium will identify MLE applications and implications of the Core Principles of Media Literacy Education for research and explore policy implications for incorporating MLE policies within the Common Core State Standards to increase 21st Century skills necessary for digital citizenship. Panelists will discuss MLE in terms of what and how they teach/research within existing political structures, and recommendations for future.
