In and Out: Exploring the Role of Participatory Action Research in Classroom and Community Contexts

Abstract
This session will explore the use of Participatory Action Research and Youth Participatory Action Research as tools to examine aspects of teaching and learning in various formal and informal instructional contexts, including classrooms, after-school activities, community events, and grassroots political movements. In particular, the panel will describe social-justice oriented education and civic engagement efforts that create opportunities for urban youths to actively engage in the transformation of their communities while they move across and collaborate with different institutions. It will also discuss how active involvement in the betterment of one’s communities and in the development of solutions to issues of concern to youth, such as the school-to-prison pipeline, gentrification, and “the achievement gap,” can also promote and support academic success.
