It’s a Matter of Trust: Literacy Inquiry Mentors as a Model for Improving Teacher Effectiveness

Abstract

The Literacy Inquiry Mentor model is an approach for both undergraduate and graduate reading clinical experiences. In this model, mentors and mentees discuss an issue around literacy and engage in thinking/planning. Using paraphrasing, questioning, and probing, the mentor encourages the mentee to think deeper about instruction and student outcomes. The workshop will begin with an overview of the Literacy Inquiry Mentor model and progress to hands-on activities. Participants will engage in discussions about mentoring videos, reflecting on effective mentoring and ineffective mentoring examples. Participants will also take part in role-playing exercises. The presentation will end with a discussion on application of the model and participants will receive a Literacy Inquiry Mentor handbook with protocols, samples, research articles, and process templates.
