Growing Your Own, Grounded in Participatory Action Research: Using Participatory Approaches in Teacher Education

Abstract

What can Participatory Action Research (PAR), as an approach, contribute to teacher education? As an approach in which research participants are not only the focus of the inquiry but partners in it, PAR is beginning to get some attention in teacher education. In this interactive session, members of the National Latino Education Research and Policy Project will articulate and demonstrate PAR with an Entremundos perspective (Torre, 2009), inside a Latin@, community-focused, grow-your-own teacher education initiative. Panelists will share the theoretical lineages informing PAR Entremundos and the guiding principles guiding our work, offer examples of these principles in action, and invite the audience to participate by engaging in a pedagogical activity that has been used as part of a PAR-based curriculum.
