Project CORE: Transforming Education for English Language Learners

Abstract

Project CORE is a multi-tiered professional development program for educators in a U.S.-Mexico border city that focuses upon providing access to the Common Core Language Arts Standards for English language learners. This session describes the Project’s innovative design, guiding principles, and implementation. Initial findings demonstrate the Project’s impact on its three participant groups (teacher education faculty, pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers) as well as areas for improvement. Quantitative methods are used to examine the effectiveness of Project CORE, while qualitative analysis captures the voices of participants. In this session, presenters highlight opportunities and challenges for building educator praxis in order to provide English language learners with high quality education and access to 21st century college and career readiness skills.
