Developing Excellent Teachers in Rural and Remote Communities: Challenges and Efforts in Rural Alaska

Abstract
In this session we present research addressing some causes of high teacher turnover in Alaska, and initiatives to both reduce it and improve teacher effectiveness and student learning, especially with indigenous students. Our goal is to understand how schools and districts can retain and support effective teachers, and to help state and local policymakers and school leaders develop policies and practices that improve teacher retention, teacher effectiveness and student outcomes. While no one of the issues facing Alaska districts is unique to the state, the combination of economic, geographic, social and cultural challenges provides a unique opportunity for identifying successful strategies and mediating factors, and can provide lessons to communities facing similar challenges elsewhere.
