Session Type: Roundtable Session
Through a perspective that views education as essentially an interactive process, in this symposium we will explore different kinds of online interactions. Our inquiry will be grounded in new literacy theories which define literacy in terms that go beyond textual decoding to include the multimodal “texts” that are so prevalent nowadays. We will discuss different examples of user interactions in online spaces where the combination of multiple modes (text, audio, image, video) plays a key role in facilitating learning processes. We will look at 1) multilingual interactions facilitated by images on a Social Networking Site, 2) informal peer learning activities in online music sharing communities, and 3) Three minute online videos that foster dialogue around social issues through interactions.
