Abstract

Peer influences on academic engagement, motivation and achievement have been the subject of recent research in education. The social ecology of the classroom has a number of interesting and yet unexplored mechanisms for impacting student’s academic and social outcomes. The four papers presented explore the varying influence of friendships, peer groups and peer reputations to the development of student self-concept, classroom engagement and motivations to achieve. The potential role of teachers for intervening and influencing these peer relationships and statuses is also addressed.
