Welcome to the Dream: Revolutionizing Education Amid Egypt’s Ongoing Arab Spring

Abstract

The 2011 Arab Spring had a profound on Egypt's 85 million people. One of the driving forces was the lack of employment opportunities for a surging bulge of young people and their extreme frustration with their educational system. The revolution has provided an opening to dream of new ways to overcome long standing education problems with their curriculum and assessment. Funded by a $25 million grant from USAID, a U.S.–Egyptian team is designing 3-5 innovative public STEM high schools. These schools are designed to develop socially responsible leaders to address Egypt’s Grandest Challenges: from urban congestion to clean energies. This symposium will discuss the development and parameters of the project, highlighting its revolutionary aspects that can inform US education.
