Session Type: Symposium
Three large urban districts have been awarded substantial grants for a three-year pilot program to improve literacy achievement for K-3 students in six schools. Each district was challenged to design its own innovative, customized approach to address the same general goals: (1) address the needs of struggling readers; (2) use a tiered data-based instructional approach; and (3) make improvements to instruction facilitated through the use of coaches and professional learning communities. Using research findings from the independent evaluation teams, the symposium will focus on early implementation and effectiveness of the initiative across the three districts. Findings focus on data from two districts after their first year of the pilot and the third district after two years of the pilot.
