Abstract

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a large-scale international achievement assessment administered to national probability samples of approximately 5,000 15-year old students in each of 67 countries every 3 years. The survey assesses mathematics, reading, science, problem solving, and contextual (noncognitive) factors. Symposium objectives are to present highlights from the not-yet-released PISA 2012 survey, the first conference presentation of the PISA 2012 results. Highlights include a review of 2000-2012 achievement growth trends across different countries, a comparison of equity in achievement between countries, several innovative new opportunity-to-learn (OTL) measures, the relationships between climate, attitudes, and achievement using anchoring vignettes, a new approach to coding rating-scale responses, and a cross-cultural comparison of mathematics teaching and learning strategies.
