New Twists on Latent Transition Analysis: Unique Adaptations and Applications

Abstract

The Latent Transition Analysis (LTA) model has grown in popularity over the past 10 years as evidenced by increased applications in educational research. This latent variable mixture model is most commonly used in longitudinal settings, modeling within-person transitions in latent class membership with the latent classes at each time period characterized by the same set of observed indicators, measured repeatedly over time. The four papers in this symposium each present a novel departure from this traditional specification—novel in the estimation, specification, and interpretation of model parameters. Each talk will highlight the flexibility of the general LTA modeling framework to address important educational and behavioral research questions.
