Critical Race Theory, Praxis, and Pedagogy in Music Education

Abstract

This symposium addresses the assertion that despite the salience of race in music education practice and the prominence of the topic in the broader field of education, it remains under theorized in music education. In this session, prominent scholars of critical race theory in education and emerging scholars in music education present a theoretical perspective for music education scholarship and practice analogous to the use of CRT in education and legal work. The panelists address potential uses and misinterpretations of critical race theory for advancing music education scholarship and practice. Panelists address the limitations of previous anti-racist and multicultural music education paradigms.
