Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age: Possibilities and Challenges for Innovation in Democratic Education

Abstract

This session aims to engage the audience in consideration of how research can help address three key challenges in education for democratic citizenship--challenges related to a) the marginality of civic education to the core curricular priorities, b) the paradoxical need for preparation for multicultural citizenship at the national and global level that is implemented in frequently segregated local contexts, and c) the need for attention to preparation for skills and practices that are emerging in a digital media rich environment. Each presentation will share research that provokes new considerations for what effective civic education looks like and what it will take to ensure that students have access in school settings.
