Session Type: Symposium
Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in the promotion of social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools, and recent research points to the effectiveness of SEL programs in promoting students’ social and emotional skills, mental health, and academic achievement. Additionally, the adoption of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs in schools and of SEL standards in states has grown over the last decade. Many teachers, however -- both educators and administrators – have not been adequately prepared to apply and understand the effective implementation of SEL. The papers in this session will report on emerging research and policy regarding the degree to which SEL is being included in teacher preparation courses and program in the US and Canada.
