Continuing the Conversation: Enacting Participatory and Social Justice-Oriented Methodologies in Working With Youth and Teachers

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Franklin 8

Session Type: Working Group Roundtable

Abstract

This working-group roundtable continues the conversation on enacting participatory and social-justice oriented methodologies in working with youth and teachers to better understand how researchers may remain attentive to civic imaginaries and possibilities of youth and teachers, and to forefront participants’ cultural assets/knowledge(s) construction(s)/ lived experiences. The roundtable brings together three researchers who presented a Working Group Roundtable on “Remixing Participatory and Social-Justice Oriented Methodologies” at the AERA 2013 annual convention, as well as one individual researcher who was an attendee of that roundtable, to continue sustained work as an ongoing collaborative study group to advance emerging outcomes of participatory and social-justice oriented methodologies. Participants are researchers across three institutions investigating projects with teachers and youth across urban education, curriculum studies, literacy- and social-studies education, engaging ethnographic, case-study, and interpretive methodological approaches. Continuing the conversation involves grappling with how researchers unsettle and reframe researcher/participant relationships in data collection and analysis. Presenters will invite attendees to continue the collaboration via a Facebook group on remixing methodologies, formed following the 2013 working-group workshop to reimagine the one-time roundtable as an ongoing study group.
