Division H Vice-Presidential Invited Session. The Use of Student Learning Objectives in Teacher Evaluation: Measurement and Policy Considerations

Abstract

This joint symposium between Division H (Research, Evaluation and Assessment in Schools) and the Directors of Research & Evaluation (DRE) examines Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) as measures of teacher effectiveness from multiple perspectives. Presenters will discuss both measurement and policy-related issues in the operationalization of SLOs in teacher evaluation systems. This symposium will begin by setting a context for how SLOs became part of the teacher evaluation milieu and the various forms they have taken in different states and districts, with a focus on promising practices. Next, the experience of providing technical support to districts on design and implementation of SLOs will be discussed. Finally, this symposium session will shift to a discussion from a district’s perspective on implementation and rollout of SLOs, the challenges involved, and the reaction of teachers to using of SLOs to measure performance.
