Division L Fireside Chat. Brown’s Aftermath: The Evolution of Integration and Desegregation Policy, Research, and Practice in Education

Abstract

This fireside chat explores the history, impact, and implications of Brown v. Board, which was decided in 1954. Sixty years later, what is known about the circumstances under which Brown was decided and its immediate and long-term effects on students, schools, and communities? What are the implications of post-Brown legal decisions for integration and student assignment, especially in light of the Parents Involved decision? A panel of experts explores how policies implemented in Brown’s wake have evolved under new sociopolitical and legal climates. Panelists also examine existing forms of segregation in public schools, particularly along socioeconomic and geographic lines. Session attendees have the opportunity to learn about this topic from experts in the field and to informally interact with them.
