Division J Fireside Chat. Beyond Academia: Reaching a Broader Audience

Abstract

The purpose of this session will be to learn from scholars who have successfully bridged research with policy and practice. We will highlight alternative forms of disseminating scholarly work (e.g. briefs, white papers, trade journal publications), approaches to engaging a non-academic audience (e.g. policy makers/courts, practitioners, community members), and researching marginal topics (e.g. prisons, MSIs, etc.). We also hope to facilitate discussion regarding challenges related to reaching a broader audience, including those that arise from engaging in efforts that are not traditionally rewarded in academia.
