Hearing Voices From Philly: Reaffirming Our Commitment to Local Knowledge Through a Joint Session With Community-Based Organizations

Abstract

This session affirms our commitment as an academic community to maintain a dialogic relationship between AERA and the communities that are often the subjects of our research. It provides a forum for attendees to connect directly and purposefully with local groups working with Philadelphia families and children and to support local knowledge through service. Four local, non-profit groups will be highlighted: The Attic Youth Center, creating opportunities for LGBTQ youth; Camp Dreamcatcher, serving children affected and/or infected with HIV/AIDS; Artwell, inspiring creativity from diverse perspectives, and; Youth Services, Inc., providing assistance to at-risk youth and families. Participants from each organization will attest to their own experiences of empowerment through testimonios. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and make tangible connections with these organizations.
