“Both R&D and Retail”: Hive NYC Learning Network as Infrastructure for Learning Innovation

Abstract

Preliminary ethnographic fieldwork on the Hive NYC Learning Network, a network of 56 non-formal learning organizations, shows that support for the development of learning innovations is central to the network’s constitution. This paper focuses on one example that illustrates some of the distinct ways that the Hive NYC can act as an infrastructure for learning innovations – a persistent context for the development, iteration, circulation and adaptation of learning innovations. The paper centers regularly occurring day-long Hive-wide “Pop-Ups”, events in which many member organizations contribute and host activities for young people, and shows how they can act as multi-function sites of innovation, supporting innovation testing for some organizational actors, while providing a context for understanding and adopting innovations for others.
