Abstract

Empathy is the capacity and process of feeling and understanding yourself and the other. Using cognitive, affective, and somatic abilities empathy develop from the inner subconscious toward external behavior. In the last sixty years different scholars in different disciplines defined empathy in various ways. This paper presents an educational definition of empathy as a space for learning. The empathy space is a taxonomy that enables educators, curriculum developers, and evaluator to use empathy for educational goals. The new literacies in the digital classroom are based upon networking, collaboration, and engagement along the traditional educational goals set up by Bloom (1956). The empathic space as a taxonomy describes how fostering empathy in the digital classroom enhances the new literacies.
