Abstract

The TICL annual business meeting will include a discussion of new business and a keynote presentation by Jeroen van Merriënboer: Instructional Design Research on Complex Learning: Past, Present and Future

In 1990, the seminal article ‘Integrative goals for instructional design’ by Robert M. Gagné and M. David Merrill started a new line of instructional design research on complex learning. This research aimed to identify design guidelines that promote the simultaneous development of skills, knowledge and attitudes, or, the development of professional competencies. It is generally assumed that learning tasks which are based on real-life tasks are the driving force for complex learning. Research focuses on the nature of tasks, variability issues, sequencing, and scaffolding support and guidance. Furthermore, it is studied how learning from these tasks is best supported through the presentation of different types of information and part-task practice. This presentation will discuss main research findings from the last 20 years and also sketch future research directions.
