Session Type: Invited Session
This session addresses the challenges and strategies to scaffolding learning in immersive and distributed technology-enhanced learning environments (augmented reality systems, activities driven by mobile devices, etc). These learning environments are frequently implemented in spacious and often informal learning contexts where structured educational interventions that build conceptual understanding must be balanced with supporting self-directed learning and productive social discourse. This session presents several different approaches to designing interactive environments that permit learners to engineer new understandings amidst multiple social and technical resources available. The objective of the session is to advance our understanding of scaffolding in an increasingly sophisticated landscape of learning technologies, and to extract a set of design principles for developing effective digital learning environments.
