Teacher Education, Teacher Quality, and Accreditation Across International Borders: Can the Local Go Global?

Abstract

At a time when US policymakers and educators alike are looking internationally for insights into practices to improve teacher education and student achievement, other nations look to the US for models of quality assurance in educator preparation. Teacher preparation institutions in Oman, Qatar, and The United Arab Emirates are the focal points for discussing the value they found in seeking US accreditation and its processes to address local issues of quality assurance and program improvement. Public perceptions of teacher education, student achievement, issues of diversity, identifying strong field placement opportunities, and stakeholder engagement are global themes with local implications. The panel presents challenges and opportunities in crossing international borders to improve teacher preparation.
