Graduate Student Council Past Chair Fireside Chat: Navigating the Academic Job Search

Abstract

Going “on the job market” in academia can be both stressful and perplexing for new graduates. To the uninitiated, the process seems shrouded in mystery, as the expectations, culture and environments of each position can be so different. In this session, attendees will hear experiences of recent graduates who are now Assistant Professors, as well as Associate and full Professors who have worked as search committee and department chairs. Panelists will reflect upon their experiences in early- and mid-career job searching, addressing points such as interpreting the job description, crafting the perfect cover letter, and succeeding in interviews. These practical tips are intended to demystify the process and help attendees attain positions that are the best fit for them.
