Abstract

While the tradition of youth activism spans over 100 years in the U.S., it is a relatively newer field of social science, and teeming with potential to impact future practice, policy, and research. Organizations empowering young people to lead social change propel them towards becoming fully engaged citizens, despite their exclusion from traditional political processes. In this session, a panel of scholars will address, in the context of their own research programs, questions such as these: What are organizational practices that promote youth agency and empowerment? What are the roles of academic educational researchers in helping to sustain and support these organizations? How does participation affect outcomes for poor urban youth? What are future directions for this field of research?
