Navigating the Academy: A Seminar for Early Career Scholars in Division G

Abstract

Division G has organized a seminar for early career scholars. During the seminar, early career scholars (defined as pre-tenure university faculty) and established senior scholars will gather at roundtables and focus on various topics related to research and scholarship, teaching, and service. Topics to be discussed at the seminar include:

- Defining your purpose and research agenda in academia - Defining one's self and research niche within Division G

- Navigating the larger academy and your own university in relation to the field of social contexts of education and social justice. How can you do this work when it's sometimes not valued even in your own college?

- Getting your message out - presenting at conferences and publishing your work

- Moving towards tenure and promotion - my own personal journey

- Beyond survival - finding a work-life balance and genuinely finding a "happiness" in your life in academia

Early career scholars will need to apply and be selected to participate in this seminar.
The seminar will end with a networking reception for early career scholars and more established senior scholars.
