Abstract

This study looks at what group work meant to teachers and how it was implemented in everyday classrooms. Using a case study design, four teachers of English were investigated for their understanding of the purposes of group work. How this understanding was related to their general beliefs about teaching, past learning experiences and enactment in practice were also examined. This paper focuses on elaborating a Vygotskian framework to analyze teachers’ group work pedagogy bearing specific objectives and contextual features of the classrooms. It concludes with some implications for further research on collaborative learning and teacher education.
