Identity Formation, the Social Imaginary, and the Construction of Otherness in the Curriculum

Abstract

The papers in the session will use theories of social imaginary to discuss how social and cultural structures and understandings construct representations, practices and social institutions in multiple ways. In this way, the papers will explore how dominant groups imagine and construct the “the other” and how this has led to the ways otherness is portrayed in the curriculum, schools, and other social institutions. The papers will look at how this social imaginary influences how student see themselves and construct their identity.
