Symbolic Violence and Different Dimensions of the Urban Child in Education and Curriculum

Abstract

Drawing upon the notion of symbolic violence, first introduced by Pierre Bourdieu (1999), the papers in this session discuss how symbolic violence acts in urban schools and in other spaces in society that has lead to the construction of the “urban child” in ways that perpetuate structures that re/produce power relations (e.g., class, gender and race). Everyday modes of sociocultural domination have been constructed as “normal” and have also shaped students’ and their families’ knowledge of social reality that arguably leads them to accept social injustices as natural and “the way things are”.
