National Center for Education Statistics Longitudinal Surveys: A Bold Vision for the Future From the Research Community

Abstract

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) provides a crucial service for the nation in generating periodic national longitudinal surveys of students. These surveys have provided evidence for a wide range of scientific investigations for over 40 years. Over this time, profound changes have occurred in the demography of the U.S. student population, in the technology available for research and for teaching and learning, and in data available beyond the national surveys. How might these changes create new opportunities and challenges for the NCES longitudinal surveys? The National Academy of Education and NCES staff recently convened a workshop to address this question, and this session will present bold new ideas generated at the workshop. Audience members will be invited to comment and pose further questions.
