Doing Qualitative Research: A Course for Beginners

Abstract

Based on student-generated questions and concerns, this “hands on” course uses a mix of discussion and small group activities to address key issues faced by beginners to qualitative research. This introductory course focuses on 1) strategies for overcoming common challenges encountered in learning the craft of doing high quality qualitative research and 2) helping students to develop a roadmap for building qualitative research skills. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the general principles guiding high quality qualitative inquiry, concrete practice putting those principles to work, and resources for continuing to develop skills and knowledge. “Participants should be familiar with the methodological concepts presented in The Beginner’s Guide to Doing Qualitative Research (Horvat 2013). The workshop will be led by Erin Horvat and Bradley Bergey with assistance from advanced graduate student researchers.
