Risk, Resilience, and Resistance: (Re)framing Social-Emotional Learning Among Black Youth

Abstract

Over the past 20 years, SEL scholarship has grown to encompass programs aimed at 1) risk prevention, 2) resilience promotion, and 3) facilitation of transformative resistance to achieve meaningful social change. I offer some examples of these approaches with Black youth, highlighting issues of culture and socioeconomic status, and situating transformative resistance efforts in current national and global contexts.
