Community Outreach on the Ground: Using University Outreach to Build Parent Capacity

Abstract

University faculty members are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the education in schools in cities where they are located. As research centers, we have access to the ability to get answers to the questions many schools and districts are asking. I have utilized my capacity as a researcher and former teacher to reach out to a neighborhood school near my university to form a partnership between myself, the school and parents of children who attend the school. I will discuss the partnership and how I have educated the principal and the parents to increase their capacity to enrich their children’s educational experiences.
