Case Studies of Schools of Education: What We Can Learn About Improving Data Literacy Among Educators

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Data use is a means by which to stimulate continuous improvement. It is no longer acceptable to use anecdotes or gut feelings. Educators must use data and evidence to inform practice. Education officials have made clear that all educators must become data literate, although schools of education believe they have courses on data literacy, they really are addressing assessment literacy. This paper reports on a set of case studies of schools of education to explore in-depth the content of stand-alone courses on data-driven decision making or the integration of data concepts into existing courses, and the processes by which the development and implementation of data-related courses and practica are occurring. Implications for integrating data concepts into higher education are explored.
