Race Matters: Exploring the Relationship Between Race and Teacher Motivations

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

A sparse body of knowledge appears on the relationship between teacher candidates’ race and their motivations to enter the profession. This paper seeks to advance the knowledge base on what we know about how an individual’s racial identity influences his/her motivation to enter the teaching profession. Based on a yearlong study conducted in a large school district, Colton County Public Schools, which serves primarily African-American and Latino students, the paper describes the motivations to teach for a cohort of former STEM professionals who become alternatively prepared through the Alternative Certification for Science and Mathematics (ACSM) Program.
