Abstract

Multi-tiered choice learning environments ensure students’ perceptions of ‘doable’ and challenging work, despite interest and understanding and wellbeing fluctuations and the diverse learning abilities in today’s classroom. The Flexible Choice Science Program (FCSP) uses time and technology as variables to enhance student learning of new concepts. Time and sequencing are used within the structure to allow faster learners to move ahead, and slower learners to progress at their pace. A differentiated technology platform allows for satisfaction of multiple student conceptualization levels producing better fit understanding. Results show that FCSP developed greater (22%) positive learning outcomes for elementary students compared to control. This research holds promise for public schools to reclaim more learners in a single lesson.
