Flipping the Classroom: Embedding Self-Regulated Learning Prompts in Videos

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Sheffield

Abstract

This study examined embedded self-regulated learning (SRL) prompts in a video designed for a flipped class. The sample included 32 undergraduate participants who were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: Control (video) or experimental (video + SRL prompts). Prior knowledge was measured with a pre-test, SRL was measured with a concurrent think-aloud, and learning outcomes were measured with a posttest. Monitoring of understanding significantly predicted pausing, restarting, and replaying the video. Additionally, participants who received embedded SRL prompts in the video activated prior knowledge, monitored understanding, and controlled the video significantly more frequently than participants from the control condition. Lastly, embedded SRL prompts in the video significantly and positively affected learning outcomes.
