This study examines how a community service-learning (CSL) program improved preservice teachers’ understanding of Latino children’s everyday practices in science and math. Participants were seven mathematics and two science preservice teachers and 30 first through tenth grade children in a South Texas colonia, or unincorporated settlement. Data sources were candidates’ pre- and final reflections, rapport building analysis, daily learning logs and lesson plans; and children’s interviews. Using qualitative data and grounded theory we analyze the different funds of knowledge that children brought into the program. We focus on how preservice teachers used these funds to develop and implement lessons with them. Finally, we examine the implications of CSL for the teacher candidates’ future disciplinary teaching in and out of school.
