Using the First Principles of Instruction: A Design and Development Research Study

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Addison

Abstract

This presentation will focus on a design and development research study conducted to examine the use of Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction (FPI) to determine if they were conducive to being implemented during a fast-paced project that required the creation of a large number of online K-12 teacher professional development modules. A case study approach was used to examine the conditions under which FPI was used and the decisions made by instructional designers during the project. Findings revealed that time constraints, designer experience, project requirements, personnel, physical setting, quality of training, and frequency of team meetings contributed to decision-making and ultimately to the use and misuse of FPI. Implications for instructional design research and practice will be discussed.
