The purpose of this paper is to theoretically engage in a dialogue about how teacher professionality can be understood in relation to ethics of alterity and ethics of dissensus, which in different ways express a desire to contest violence by recognizing the presence of the radical Other. Whereas ethics of alterity opens up a thinking that grapples with the presence of the radical Other in education, Ziarek provides a language that interconnects ethic of alterity with the political and presence of power relations and the interference with bodily reactions that exist and invade education. A teacher professionality that takes ethics of alterity and ethics of dissensus into account requires a teacher situated in the present encountering the unknown.
